What does a car buyer's rep do?

A car buyer's rep works for the buyer, not the dealer. They gather written out-the-door quotes, negotiate the price, question fees and add-ons, keep the trade-in separate, and check the final paperwork against what was agreed. Most charge a flat fee so their pay does not rise with the car's price.

What they negotiate

The selling price is only one line. A rep also works on dealer fees, add-ons printed on a second window sticker, the trade-in value and the finance rate, because each can move the total.

What they cannot do

A rep cannot make a dealer sell below what it will accept, and cannot sign for you. You buy the car from the dealer, and you decide whether to accept each offer.

How to choose one

Ask how they are paid. A flat fee paid by you keeps them on your side. Ask whether any dealer pays them, and ask to see a sample of the written quotes they collect.

Quick answers

Is a buyer's rep the same as a broker?

Not always. Some brokers are paid by dealers. A buyer's rep is paid by you.

Is it worth it on a used car?

Often, because used-car pricing and add-ons vary more between dealers. The rep also asks for the history report and inspection before you commit.
